i have tried  
<topic name="foo *">
      <category>
        <pattern>MANY THINGS</pattern>
        <template>FOO</template>
      </category>
  </topic>
in programd4.6 ,and got error:cvc-pattern-valid: Value 'foo *' is not facet-valid.
it seems that we can not add wildcard in topic.

the advantage of aiml in my opinion is the common advantage of aiml,nothing special.
With thousand of  QAs in the knowledge base,a bot can cover most of usual chat.AIML
provides a good way to organize QAs as well as providing some fuzzy match and other
utilities using "that","topic",wildcard etc.Generally say, i think the key to aiml is in which way
you orgnize your categories to make you easy to manipulate and reduce redundancy.
