Another AIML spinoff, Runabot, uses the same module approach to AIML sharing
as AI Buddy. In their case, AIML authoring and sharing are encouraged by
assigning a "popularity" ranking to each botmaster who submits "mods." The more
people there are using a person's mods, the better their popularity rank. I
don't have a clue about the mechanics of how they determine how many people
are using which mods, but they do. There are also "Top Mods" and "Editor's
Choice" sections for outstanding examples of coding.
Of course, this has its drawbacks. There are a lot of really inane mods
created by people who hope to compete for a good ranking by submitting dozens
of mods, however inferior, that others might use. There's also constant
bickering among the members about plagiarism. And since new mods can be submitted
directly from the individual user's control panel, I suppose it requires
someone to monitor the "New Mods" section for malicious code, hate speech, etc.
But it does generate a lot of interest in authoring AIML among their members,
and occassionally there's a diamond to be found amongst the lumps of coal.
I've been trying to build up a repository of sorts at my forum, _AI Nexus
Forum_ (http://knytetrypper.proboards19.com/index.cgi) , but most of my
members are just lurkers, lol, and only a half dozen or so people have actually
contributed any material. Still, over time, there's starting to be an
accumulation of code snippets of particular use to a fledgling botmaster. Hopefully
over a bit more time, it will start to become a genuine resource.

Richard Gray
