The [wta-talk] ML has been very active on psychology
articles these days, and interesting references for
bot designers keep popping up. The last one is Steven
Reiss' 16 basic motivations [1]:

* power;
* independence;
* curiosity;
* acceptance;
* order;
* saving;
* honor;
* idealism;
* social contact;
* family;
* status;
* vengeance;
* romance;
* eating;
* physical exercise;
* tranquility.

Reiss' theory goes that different people have
different "desire levels" for each one of these items,
ranging from a very deep desire, to some interest, to
no interest at all. I think that an interesting form
of using this list for bot design is following these
steps:

1- Rank the desires, according to the bot's
priorities.

2- Divide the list in two halves. The top half defines
what the bot wants and strives to reach; the bottom
half defines what it tries to avoid.

3- Take the top three and bottom three items of the
list: these are, respectively, the bot's main desires
and main rejections.

I don't think this would make a good stand-alone
proccess for personality design, but combined with
other approaches, it may provide a nice touch of
initiative to a bot.

[1] It seems there is not much in english about Reiss'
work. The best reference I managed to find is this
article:
