If it is properly marked in a <![CDATA[ section, there's no reason to parse
it, otherwise you have to (unless xml:space="preserve" is used).

Not sure about this, wasn't this the norm when using old typewriters and a
monospaced font? Today, in the age of variable width fonts and "block"
alignment, two "whitespaces" loose meaning (unless someone decises to
separeate sentences by two line breaks), about the same as when you "write"
two spaces by hand. MHO.

You could mark sentences with some kind of <sentence>. Whitespace is only
about appearance, that's why <p> is used for paragraphs.
