Yeah, * * is ambiguous since "one or more" could also happen with the first
wildcard.  It is not clear that only "one" is allowed for that first
wildcard whereas using $ would be a dead give-away.  If we have to count
words in matching patterns, I say count them with a symbol defined to do so!
