Maybe in the end I really need nothing more than an General Interface 
Protocol that can be used for passing structured requests and receiving 
structured replies between the AIML server and other servers.  If this is 
the best way to go, then I see needing:

  A way to pass AIML variable data associated with variable names, and/or 
delimited text data,  over to the foreign server.

A way to wait for the response to be delivered, and what to do if it never 
arrives.

A way to receive text data and to be able to assign it to AIML variables.

And perhaps your thoughts about transaction numbers, authentication and 
security can come into play here.
