Is there anyway that we could (as in ArchComm) be allowed to "protect" symbols in the pattern?  Even
if it was something like escaped, examples:

<pattern>HTTP\:\/\/\:WWW\.ALICEBOT\.ORG</pattern>
<pattern>HTTP[://]WWW[.]ALICEBOT[.]ORG</pattern>
<pattern>*[://]*[.]*[.]*</pattern>

Is there a general feeling on protecting punctuation from substitution?
