[alicebot-archcomm] [NO VOTE] Attribute var

I find myself agreeing quite strongly with these sentiments, but the
proposal maps very closely to (part of) one I posted a while ago.

I don't want to vote no for reasons unconnected with the motion (and in this
case kill something I fundamentally agree with), but neither do I want to
vote yes without proper explanations and discussion.

So I propose backpedalling -- let's put stage 2 on ice while we've properly
finished stage 1.
