I've read this article by someone. Was wondering whether ALICE was really AI?
"pattern matching is not necessarily AI though it may be - depends on the
particular techique that is used. Similarly data mining is not machine
learning, unless machine learning algorithms are used - about ELIZA being
AI - ELZA is based on Rogerian psyhcoanalysis - where the analysis
questions merely throw back on the prevous response from the patient -
there is no reasoning - for a system to be AI, there must be reasoning. If
the pattern matching algorithm incorporates reasoning, then it is AI The
fact that pattern matching may not be AI need not mean you should'nt use it
- there are important applications of pattern matching in finance for, e.g.
The ELIZA thing has spawned a lot of debate - and there is an annual
competition in the US where ELIZA type systems are built with the intention
of fooling the observer into thinking that the system is "intelligent"
