Here's an idea Hawking may not have considered. I just read a
fascinating article by Andy Clark (link below) about how Humans should
be considered to be "natural cyborgs", that we've been a technologically
augmented species all the way back to when we first invented speech,
tools, stories, culture. Almost no humans have ever lived without a
lifelong integral use of human-made technologies, whether it be
primitive (like spoken language, mythology, clothing, fire) or
sophisticated (like frozen food, telephones, airplanes, and computers).
Unless you are a "wild child", brought up by wolves, you are a
technologically enhanced cyborg.

I mention this because Hawking doesn't even consider the fact that as
AIs get more advanced, they will simply be integrated into what it means
to be human. They will become as much a part of humanity as any other
technology. They will be the latest, most advanced cybernetic technology
to integrate with us:
