Yes, a pink laser struck my head and I suddenly found myself looking from
the outside at a black iron prison... :-)

I guess I am saying that the naturalist athlete is an automaton like all of
us, but perhaps more conscious about it. The present-day technological
obsession seems to have gone astray, neglecting the essential nature of
being human in favor of a mythological vision of ourselves as being part of
some great "progress". Work in AI has the potential to either exacerbate
that mythological obsession or to get out from under it, use the tools at
our disposal to obtain an objectivity that is more spiritually useful.

Erik Davis has a nice survey of technology and spiritualism in his book
"TechGnosis", although I think the book is mostly inconclusive, just a sort
of gallery of factoids. Here's something about artificial intelligence (kind
of a long quote, sorry):

	"Philosophers and programmers may wrangle over the question of how 'alive'
these wild things really are, but the question of technological life cannot
be decided solely with the analytic language of neural networks, Darwinian
selection, and genetic algorithms. For all its technical prowess, such
language tends to disguise the fact that our sense of agency, of the
presence of life and intelligence, also depends on the narratives and
emotions that structure our everyday experience of the world. Though the
chess grand master Gary Kasparov knew that Deep Blue was devoid of desires
and intentions, he claimed to sense a thinking opponent, a perception that
did not derive from the machine's data architecture but from his own
embodied relationship with a social actor. Many computer users unconsciously
treat their PCs as pesky if powerful imps, an animist relationship to the
machine that is often encouraged by the design of user interfaces, games,
and children's software. ... And if the designers of 'intelligent agents'
have their way, then even more explicitly lifelike digital critters will be
loosed into the information jungle, bargaining for plane tickets, leading us
through databases, and undoubtedly trying to make a buck from us as well.
	"Perhaps the phenomenon of techno-animism is nothing more than the latest
upgrades from the society of the spectacle, infantilizing spells designed to
crush whatever critical distance still allows some of us to question the
technocapitalist domination of the world." (p. 188)

Then he goes on to say that perhaps this is all right, in a kind of confused
statement about how this is how "technologies gain their character, if not
their lives". Davis can't get much farther than the idea that we are all
"weaving plots", and he seems to feel like this is probably all right. The
best thing he can say is that we enchant ourselves with more and more
updates to stories, which enables us to do more "soul-searching".

But Baudrillard would tell you that this is hopelessly quaint, that all of
this apparent richness and newness is really just an illusory freeze-frame,
inside of which we're still captivated by notions of progress but which from
the outside is just a cover for the fact that nothing is really going on.

I think that work in AI could be considered "unethical", or at least taking
an ethical position that I would identify myself against, if it promotes
this same kind of animist ideal. AI ought to be one area where we can really
say that we're exploring who we are. Of course a lot of people doing
professional AI work would agree with this, but what I think they don't see
is that so much of their methodology is actually tightly-wound with a sort
of magical belief-structure. The elaborate descriptive energy that goes into
explaining the "structure of language", the "language of thought", the
"structure of consciousness" focus attention squarely on the mechanics of it
all, and give little credence to the notion that what's being "discovered"
is just discovering itself, which very well means that it might also be
inventing itself.

I think that a lot of AI research may inadvertently develop technologies
that just seal our fate forever as dazzled automatons. The ubiquity of
technology in our lives now means that anyone can become a magician. This is
especially dangerous in AI because AI is fundamentally a philosophical
enterprise. Work that gets done under the banner of AI, but which is
actually sloppy in its philosophy (or just unconcerned at all with
philosophy) can have the unfortunate effect of seeming to lend philosophical
support to control mechanisms that are at odds with "free thinking", or
self-realization, or however you want to put it.

We have been talking in other forums about development methodology. Rich
made the point that Linus Torvalds did everything wrong, except that his
work completely upset the hegemony of Microsoft in the OS market (and
possibly elsewhere). The problem is that Linus's statements like "release
early and often" are so inspiring to legions of coders, and so often debased
into an even cruder form of "release something and see if it sucks", that a
whole lot of energy is wasted in general. I have been advocating the
position that this is especially dangerous in a project that purports to be
investigating intelligence, and I think that my biggest reason for feeling
this way is what I just said above: AI is so closely linked with fundamental
philosophical questions that we don't have answers to, that it risks
mistaking the euphoria of technological experimentation for real insight.
That can have very dangerous consequences for the kind of world we or our
children may one day live in (or may be already living in).
