I agree with you here...gun control cannot control the black market...

This is IMHO not a problem of gun control, this is because the police =
and
other authorities do not have enough men and means to make smuggling and
obtaining illegal guns much more difficult than it is nowadays...

I am German...I can imagine this very well...
And all I can say about this is that in a country where =
obtaining/carrying
firearms is illegal unless you have a very good (officially approved, =
that
is) reason, it is much less likely to be assaulted by a person carrying =
a
pistol/rifle/shoutgun or whatever...
Statistics show that most assaults or robberies are committed with "more
harmless" weapons, such as knives or (yes!) baseball bats...crimes =
involving
actual firearms are the minority as in most cases the pistol turned out =
to
be a toy gun or a gun only capable of firing blanks or CS-ammo (these =
things
are legal in Germany)...
I think the simple fact that someone you are going to attack is very
unlikely to carry a gun makes it unnecessary for you to get one =
himself...
Statistics also show that people carrying illegal guns only use them =
when
absolutely neccessary (in their opinion), as carying a gun with you, no
matter whether you actually use it, and getting caught with it is a =
reason
to put you in jail for quite some time...

The best fight is the one you could avoid...as long as my family and I =
do
not get hurt, I don't care about all material things a gangster might =
take,
as -unlike yourself or family members- all material things are
replaceable...
